Book Review: "I Hate People"

The complete title is "I Hate People!: Kick Loose from the Overbearing and Underhanded Jerks at Work and Get What You Want Out of Your Job" and it is certainly not your typical business book. The overall premise is that no matter how large or small your organization you are almost certainly going to have to deal with people you can't stand. This is a handbook for doing exactly that. It helps you identify and then deal with the top 10 "least wanted" co-workers. Examples include the "Stop Sign" ("Digital cameras will never catch on!", the Switchblade ("watch your back"), and whole group of Time Wasters.

The answer? According to authors Jonathan Littman and Marc Hershon is being able to fly solo. After four decades of teamwork emphasis leading to dubious results, it's time to realize that breakthroughs and ingenuity (not to mention personal satisfaction) comes from individuals not by being shackled to an underperforming team engaged in mind-numbing groupthink. Being a soloist doesn't mean being a "loner, recluse, or a maverick" say the authors, instead it means being armed with the tools to steer clear of out-of-the-loop bosses and slacker teammates. Soloists can be part of teams but they still get to perform key tasks alone which is where they excel.
