Women Over 55 Are Now The Fastest Growing Demographic on Facebook

Wesley's picture

Think that young males dominate Facebook? Think again, a new survey of Facebook users has some surprising results:

1. Fastest growing segment: Women over 55, up 175.3% in the last 120 days.

2. Facebook growing faster with women than men in almost every age group.

3. Women comprise 56.2% of Facebook’s audience, up from 54.3% late last year.

4. 45% of Facebook’s US audience is now 26 years old or older.

Overall, women now outnumber men in every age group on Facebook. In total, women now make up about 56.2% of Facebook’s US audience, up from 54.3% late last year. Women most outnumber men in the 18-25 and 26-34 age groups, where there are 1.4 females for every 1 male on Facebook.

Of course!

I'm not surprised that there are more women on Facebook. Women tend to be more social! Also it seems perfectly logical to me that the older generation is the fastest growing segment-- we have met more people throughout our lives that we have lost touch with! It's natural for people to come and go as friends depending on life circumstances, geographic distance, and changing values and goals, but Facebook and similar social networking venues make it easy to share pieces of our lives with whoever is interested. I don't have time to write long emails or letters to many people, but I can post tidbits of my life that those who are interested can see. I enjoy knowing what my friends are up to now and then, and I can make closer contact if I choose to do so. So many people bash the whole concept as being shallow and impersonal but it really depends on how you use it and what place it has in your life as a whole. I for one am deeply grateful for the internet and the possibilities it has opened up for me.
