Health News: Cancer Death Rate Dropping
Submitted by Wesley on May 27, 2009 - 9:01am.
The recently released collaborative report from the American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and North American Association of Central Cancer Registries announced that between 2002 and 2004, death rates dropped by an average of 2.1 percent a year. This rate of decline is significantly greater than the reductions seen in previous years. One of the biggest impacts were gains made in colorectal cancer (which attacks the colon) with early screening being a factor cited. When a screening spots precancerous polyps in time to remove them the dangerous cancer can be stopped from forming. It was noted however that despite these improvements "only about half the people who need colorectal cancer screening — everyone over age 50 — gets checked."
