Hurricane Ike Survivor and Surviving

BobbiBachaPI's picture

Hi Everyone,

Im new to the group but I wanted to let everyone know that Galveston was devested by Hurricane Ike. I live only 26 miles away and stayed during the storm and it was the most frightening thing I can remember and Ive seem many storms as I grew up and was born on Galveston Island. We dont know the body count there are rumors of many, and so much destruction.

Please read the below article and pass it along as Ike fell from the mainstream media, Galveston is much like New Orleans in a since that it has a low income welfare area that has now been condemned, and many poor families that existed and lived on the water and the the food they could catch in the gulf to support thier families, now all uprooted and thier lives forever changed. So many people have lost everything and please imagine this.. the entire island was part of the Gulf of Mexico it was submerged. There are no levies as Galveston is sea level but had a seawall built to protect it from a hard surge in central areas but flooded all the same. Im a decendent of 1900 storm victims and the cries of this storm resinate what I remember my ancesters telling me the stories. Ive cooked nearly 12 days straight for many families and victims as I had a generator and food stocks. Its getting better but Galveston is devestated.

-------------------------------------------------------- Hurricane Ike: The Missing Have Names; Ike Is Missing From The Mainstream Media Posted By Erin On September 23, 2008 (5:15 pm) In Uncategorized

No newsflash for the hundreds of thousands of people that Hurricane Ike victimized, but Hurricane Ike is virtually gone from mainstream media coverage. It has been replaced by the huge bailout of our entire financial system. Snarkfood promised to continue to follow the story- and today we are listing the names of the people we’ve been able to determine are missing. These names come directly from those who are desperately searching for them. It is by NO means a complete list.

The mainstream media’s refusal to even report a ballpark number of those who are missing is shameful, and high-visibility (celebrity) attention to the problem is ZERO. In defense of the celebrities, they, along with the rest of America are not being told the story. So we will. Here are the names of some of our American brothers and sisters who’ve been missing since Hurricane Ike hit. The following have been listed as missing or otherwise unaccounted for by their family members on the ABC 13 (Houston area) Hurricane Ike Missing Persons Locater, and the KHOU forums. Screw the media blackout.

Watch the video. Read the list. Give if you can. www.redcross.org

Michael Anderson

Does anyone know how we can get a hold of Michael Anderson. We are a local film crew in Houston. He was one of IKE's Survivors recently written about in the Houston Chronicle.

Thanks Shawn Welling 713-802-1772

Michael Anderson - Survivor

Help for Michael

Received an email from Mike's wife in reply to mine asking what they needed. I am not physically able myself to provide this kind of help and my husband works out-of-town all the time. Thought I might forward this in case you could rally up some volunteers:

"The one thing that we could really use, and this may not be something you can provide, but you asked, so I shall respond with the thing that is pressing on my mind..... since Mike has been unable to physically do much, our property is pretty much sitting the way it looked after Ike. We need to get some stuff cleaned up and piled for debris pick up before Galveston County starts jumping up and down on my head. A lot of the church organizations are gone and we had to wait until we got finished with all the insurance adjusters before we would even consider touching anything. The house was substaintially damaged and is going to have to be torn down. We are waiting to see what the FEMA buyout folks come back with because if we do the buyout, they will demolish the house once they own the land."

Anderson's - New Developments

Received this from Dawn Anderson today, does anyone have any contacts or an Advocate for them. Cannot believe they will lose their house!

We have had some developments over the weekend and it looks like the mortgage company is going to go through with the foreclosure - they have turned in a bad credit rating to the credit companies and we have been contacted by our lenders that they are now cutting off our lines of credits. We had maxed out one credit card and were using the other for some of our living expenses.

What I don't understand is we have worked with the mortgage company in every possible way and have 71,000+ in checks that they returned to us that are just sitting here. If they would have taken those in January, we would be current on our mortgage and then some. We also were called by our Private adjuster today and we are going to get 14,500 for the house from the fire, which puts us at $85,000. I called Chase three times today and just kept getting transfered to voice mail. On top of that the HUD program, which we will be approved for sometime this month informed us that starting in May we have to start paying a portion of our rent. Because they were so backlogged, we are just getting approval, while others have been on it for the last six months, but the six months of rental assistance started in December, so once we get approved, we will be responsible for $50 the first month $100 the next and it will go up in $50 increments until we are paying the full rent. It should be six months from the time you are approved, this program is not going to help us at all, it is going to hurt us. At least with FEMA, they were paying our rent in full - now we get exported to HUD, and it is going to cost us. It makes no sense to me how they expect you to get back on your feet when it takes so long to get the help - then when you do, it's less help than you had before. RED TAPE RED TAPE RED TAPE. Dawn Anderson
