Aging Backwards Tuesday Tips #54: Now Hear This
Submitted by jackie on July 1, 2008 - 3:28pm.
As we age, certain obvious changes take place that we're all aware of - wrinkles form, hair turns grey, teeth can discolor, we buy reading glasses and maybe we even gain a few pounds. One change that may not be as obvious is gradual hearing loss. Over time, the inner ear can become damaged from a lifetime of loud noise. Some hearing loss can be attributed to ear wax build-up, which can occur at any age, but most hearing loss is a result of damage to the cochlea of the inner ear. Nerve cells degenerate and tiny hairs in the cochlea become bent or broken, interrupting the transmission of electrical signals. Hearing loss is irreversible, except for loss caused by ear wax, but there are ways to protect our ears from further damage. Always check with your doctor if you think you've experienced hearing loss. Tips for Protecting Hearing 1) Wear earplugs. If you work in a noisy environment, wearing ear plugs can protect your hearing. They also have the added benefit of reducing stress because ear plugs allow you to focus on your breathing, a component of meditation. 2) Be aware of your environment. If you have to raise your voice to be heard, you are in an environment that may be hazardous to your hearing. 3) Get tested. If you suspect you may be suffering from hearing loss or you have ear pain, have your hearing tested. Your doctor may refer you to an ENT - Ear, Nose and Throat specialist - or a licensed audiologist. 4) Lower the volume. With today's technology, it's easy to damage the delicate inner ear with ear bud headphones, cell phones and other high-tech devices. Turning down the volume can help protect your hearing. Remember, noise-induced hearing loss is irreversible. 5) Take breaks. If you use loud power tools, ride a motorcycle, work in a very noisy environment or you're a musician, take 15-minute quiet breaks from the noise. Taking care of your hearing just makes "sense."
