Newsletter Readers Respond to Contest Question: "What is the best way to deal with a difficult spouse?"

Wesley's picture

Thank you for all that responded to our newsletter question on what is the best way to deal with a difficult spouse.

Here were the top three entries:

"In dealing with a difficult spouse, first ask yourself what is difficult about oneself and how might that be a challenge for one's spouse." (SM, USA)

"... remove the buttons they've learned to push." (MB, USA)

"If he or she is worth it, don't just sit there. If he or she screwed up, start over, try something else - if it's worth it to you." (NC, Canada)

What we liked about these is that they were all positive steps that put the focus on your actions and off of your spouse's. As much as we laughed at some of the other submissions, the above respondents were on target by adhering to the maxim "the only person's behavior you can change is your own."

The top entry from SM will soon be receiving her copy of Tal Ben-Shahar's "Happier".
