Anti-Aging's Latest Twist: Facial Yoga

Wesley's picture

Annelise Hagen is a yoga instructor in New York City's wealthy Upper East Side and the author of the new book "The Yoga Face: Eliminate Wrinkles with the Ultimate Natural Facelift." She is also the proponent of an alternative to plastic surgery and Botox to fight wrinkles--facial exercises.

In an interview with Reuters, Hagen described her facial stretching regimen (which she calls "Facial Yoga") and like regular yoga it has names for its various moves. Examples include "The Lion" (the tongue hangs out and eyes are rolled up), "Satchmo" (the cheeks are blown out Louis Armstrong-style), and "Marilyn" (glamorous kisses are blown to strengthen mouth muscles for full and firm lips).

Hagen's theory is that facial muscles become weak and flabby and in need regular workouts and circulation just as the rest of our body's muscles do. And when facial muscles are toned, wrinkling is reduced.

It's hard to know if Facial Yoga will resonate with women outside of tony New York neighborhoods. But anti-aging is an enormous market and it's possible that a process that can be employed for a few minutes during a morning commute might catch on.
