"Plotting for Beginners" Looks At A Year In (Mid)life
Submitted by Greg on August 1, 2007 - 8:52pm.
This isn't a review, because we haven't read this book yet. But when a well-reviewed novel about midlife pops up in early August, we'll let you know about it so you have time to order it and stuff it in your carry-on as you head out on vacation. We're talking about "Plotting for Beginners" by Sue Hepworth and Jane Linfoot. The rough structure is that fifty-something Sally Howe has a year to herself at home in England while her husband seeks ... something in Colorado. While she attempts to write her first novel she faces a host of odd events and odd people. The book's UK publisher says "'Plotting for Beginners' offers a wry evaluation of long-haul marriages, plus a lesson on how to hit the menopause running and seize your freedom when the family has gone." The Times (London) calls it "unpretentious and amusing." A reader told the UK's Guardian that "It's different, refreshing, and spot-on with its observations of the frustrations and rewards of long-in-the- tooth relationships, especially those between two people with very different sets of needs and priorities." Another reader, at Amazon UK, said it's "a highly entertaining study of insecurity and intelligence." Here in the U.S., E! Online says the book is "buoyant and charming ... Hepworth and Linfoot capture a woman feeling young again despite being in the midst of emotional tumult and middle age."
