Exercise and Caffeine Fight Skin Cancer; Have a Venti after your run

Wesley's picture

We all know that it is important to get regular exercise and while it's a little more controversial, that there are certain health benefits from the consumption of caffeinated tea and coffee. But researchers at Rutgers University believe that the combination of exercise and caffeine can increase destruction of precancerous cells that had been damaged by the sun's ultraviolet-B radiation. Yes, the combination of exercise and caffeine can fight skin cancer. Skin cancer is a common and potentially deadly disease with approximately one million new cases every year in the United States.

The qualifiers:

The research is preliminary, the trials involved mice (not humans), and the researchers have not yet nailed down the exact synergy between caffeine and exercise in fighting the cancerous cells.

People should continue to use sunscreen, wear hats and generally use common sense when being exposed to direct sunlight.

Dietary and exercise regimens should always be done in concert with your own medical professional.

The research was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and reported at Newsvine. Since there have been other studies showing benefits of caffeinated tea/coffee and of course exercise, there is reason to be optimistic that the researchers are on to something.

Some easy ways to exercise (especially if you don't think you have enough time) and don't forget the weights.
