Dean Karnazes Update; How the fight against prostate cancer leads to a full 24-hour day on a treadmill

Wesley's picture

When we last covered Dean he was running across the United States (literally not figuratively). When Dean hit 30 he decided he wanted to change his life, he walked out of a bar, ran 30 miles (one for each year he was old) and has never looked back. That was 15 years ago.

He has now just completed a 24-hour run of five straight marathons on a treadmill.

"I'm doing this event to help raise awareness for prostate cancer, which affects one in six men," he said. "I represent two organizations, the Athletes for a Cure Foundation and Accelerade, which is a new protein-enhanced sports drink. They are helping me achieve this goal by raising awareness for the disease and to hopefully find a cure in my lifetime."

Karnazes shows that otherwise ordinary people can do extraordinary things. You don't have to go to the lengths that he does, or for that matter climb the Seven Summits like Jeanne Stawiecki, but you should do something that pushes your limits whether it's an Ironman, a marathon, a multi-stage bike ride, or even a 5k. There are numerous organizations such as Team in Training that will help train you and give you the tools to raise money for charity. You'll be more healthy, feel good about the money you raised, and create a memory for a life time.
