New York Times Adds Online Columnist focusing on Career Shifts

Wesley's picture

Marci Alboher sas joined the New York Times as an on-line columnist writing a regular column called "Shifting Careers" that will focus on the new face of career changes. Marci is an expert on "slash" career paths. In fact she's authored a book on the topic, "One Person/Multiple Careers" [linked below].

From Marci's first column:

I will document the smart ways people are shifting around in their careers, both in the big fundamental ways like moving from suicide research to comedy and the more nuanced ones, like working for someone else after you have run your own business, or creating a custom-blended career by combining your training in nutrition with your passion for technology.

After nearly 10 years in corporate law, I did what many lawyers fantasize about and became a former lawyer. I took a couple of classes in freelance writing and learned I had a knack for it. I finally discovered an outlet for my itch to chat up strangers and get their stories. I also realized that being a lawyer would be a big help as I tried to break into the business pages of this newspaper and other publications. I became what I call a "slash," a lawyer/journalist.

Marci's book and her addition to the New York Times staff illustrate the monumental shift in attitudes regarding "mainstream" career paths. As Marci writes in her column, "If jumping off track once was stigmatized, it now has cachet. The track itself seems to have all but disappeared." More and more people are adopting the "slash" to their work identities as we realize that we only live once and it simply doesn't make sense to completely ignore our dreams while paying the mortgage/rent/etc.

The LifeTwo master plan is arm middle age adults with the motivation and information necessary to live the second half of their lives in a way that maximizes lasting happiness and good health while minimizing regrets. One's career path is a big part of this processing and we are pleased to see the NYT dedicating resources to it.
