Midlife Sexuality Report Says Talk First, Take The Blue Pill Later

Greg's picture

There's bad news and ... not-so-bad news about midlife sexuality, according to a new report from Harvard Medical School:

Many of the physical changes that come with age have noticeable effects on sexuality. Consequences of aging can include slower arousal, softer erections for men, reduced vaginal lubrication for women, and less intense orgasms. Medications and health conditions— such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and arthritis—can also create sexual difficulties.

The 48 page report "Sexuality in Midlife and Beyond" says that other developments that come with maturity can be used to navigate these problems: "increased confidence, better communication skills, and lessened inhibitions." But, authors Alan Altman and Suki Hanfling believe, many fail to use these tools.

The report also explores the benefits and problems of erectile dysfunction drugs. They won't fix a low libido, note the authors, and the man's partner may feel that their sexual relationship is the result of chemical reactions, not desire. They recommend better communication, and possibly sex therapy, for couples seeking problem-free and fulfilling sex in midlife and beyond.

The report is available in print or as a pdf file from Harvard Health Publications for $16.
