Attn Boomers: Rolling Stone Magazine Launching a Social Network

Wesley's picture

While there have been social networks aimed at Baby Boomers, none have really caught on. However there is one that might actually have a chance because at its core is something near and dear Baby Boomer's hearts--music.

Note that Rolling Stone has neither officially announced the social network nor said that it will be aimed at Baby Boomers. In fact it almost assuredly won't. However the Rolling Stone brand means almost nothing to the teens that dominate MySpace and Facebook. Even if it did, there are plenty of social nets fighting for the youth demographic and when it comes to music, MySpace Music means a lot more than Rolling Stone. But too Boomers, this isn't the case.

While they might be late to the party at least they have something to say once they get there.

Here is the story from Silicon Valley blog TechCrunch:

...Keith Blanchard, Wenner Media’s executive director for online media for Rolling Stone and other magazines, released the news that they plan to launch a MySpace-style social network around the Rolling Stone brand.

Andrea Feczko, one of the students in the class, saw her chance to break a story and promptly did so. Her professor, Patrick Phillips, then emailed a bunch of major bloggers with the news.

Feczko says the social network will be separate from the main Rolling Stone website, and will include “best of” lists with user voting.

There may be one problem, though. The Rolling Stone audience may be too old to get into the social networking scene. Feczko says only one person in her class actually admitted that they ever read the magazine.

Another thing...

Rolling Stone's journalists and editorial department have a certain political bent that a lot of young people shared when they were the target audience, but some of us discarded as we got older. It'll be interesting to see if the social network has room for diverse views, or perhaps can stay politically neutral or even acknowledge other views.
