Single, Dating and 50: "Naked on the Page: The Misadventures of My Unmarried Midlife"
Submitted by Wesley on April 9, 2007 - 6:52am.
Jane Ganahl is a 50 year old single mom who has penned the "Single-Minded" column for the San Francisco Chronicle for the past five years. She is also a "determined romantic" in search of her perfect soul mate, one that is "enlightened, not crazy, creative guy who is not about money, but successful enough to be able to afford a weekend in Mendocino." Her column was a frank account of her often frustrating social life and formed the basis of her book, "Naked on the Page: The Misadventures of My Unmarried Midlife". A LA Times review likened her book to "Sex in the City" by Candance Bushnell and the "Bridget Jones" series by Helen Fielding (with the difference that those are fiction why Ganahl's book is being marketed as a memoir). Ganahl "portrays herself as a neurotic, overweight, 'borderline frumpy redhead' who lives with three cats, harbors an adolescent obsession with rock stars, and struggles with loneliness." And for the first time in memory she is suitor-free. What differentiates her from the millions of others (of both sexes) who seem themselves in a similarly stark manner is that she has the means to write about it--and does so in an often humorous way. Thus we have the chance to read of a middle age woman's self-described disastrous forays into online dating and other life experiences in the 'singles lane'.
