Guess which method works best to quit smoking?

Wesley's picture

Guess which of the following is most effective for helping individuals quit smoking:

    A. Nicotine patch
    b. Nicotine gum or lozenge
    C. Bupropion (Zyban)
    D. No medication

If you picked D, you are right.

This is based on a study conducted by the National Cancer Institute. After 3 months, A, B and C all had higher success rates than D, they ended up having much higher failure rates than D such that after 9 months the success rate of the 3 was 14% in each case versus 16% for no medication.

Cold turkey also has the benefit of being free. It's clear that the number one method for quitting smoking is a motivated quitter. There are approximately 45 million smokers in America and cigarettes kill an estimated 440,000 Americans a year, but until and individual says (and believes) that they've just smoked their last cigarette, odds are they haven't. Yet there is upside. Smoking was the inspiration for the brilliant independent film "Thank You For Smoking", definitely worth a rental from Netflix.
