Fashion Goes Back To The '80s

Greg's picture

Twenty years ago, did your "look" include ...

  • fish-net t-shirts
  • shoulder pads
  • mullets (men) and big hair (women)
  • blue eyeshadow
  • fluorescent - neon colors
  • belted sweatshirts, worn off the shoulder
  • lace leggings
  • acid-wash jeans
  • legwarmers
  • frosted lipstick
  • corsets
  • miniskirts

???

Good news -- if you've got any of those items still packed away, you can dig them out and be on the cutting-edge of fashion!

The Australian reports "After decades of enduring the baby boomers' nostalgia for the 1960s and '70s, generation X is enjoying its own design deja vu. Along with George Michael, a bullish stock market and Brian Burke, fashion is experiencing an '80s revival."

Why? Donatella Versace is quoted saying "I loved the energy and freedom of the '80s ... and the glamorous decadence!"

I was in grad school and don't remember that part.

The trend could be driven by Gen X entering middle age and longing for reminders of more carefree days.

Or it could just be the neverending quest for something different. The Australian's Natasha Bita writes, without apparent irony, that

Judging by the sudden popularity of puff-ball skirts and footless leggings, (the '80s revival) is likely to prove a hit, too, with today's teenage and twentysomething genY-ers, bored with recycled '60s and '70s retro fashions and eager to experiment with something new.

"New" being relative, I suppose.
