Lose Weight or Risk Diabetes

Jed Diamond's Third Age column cites the following:

A study published in the March 2005 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, based on data collected from 27,270 subjects tracked over 13 years who participated in the Harvard Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, found that risk of diabetes and other health problems increases as the waist size expands:

    1. 34-36 inch waist = 200% increase in risk for diabetes and other health problems
    2. 36-38 inch waist = 300% increase in risk for diabetes and other health problems
    3. 38-40 inch waist = 500% increase in risk for diabetes and other health problems
    4. 40-62 inch waist = 1200% increase in risk for diabetes and other health problems

Having just finished an excellent Christmas dinner and unknown amounts of holiday sweets and libations, the above data is a pretty good wake-up call. Timely since it is New Year's resolution season. The truth be told that I don't believe much in New Year's resolutions though I do believe very much in goal setting. Whatever your process or system, if you are carrying extra pounds it is time to take the first step in that process which is a commitment to do something about it.

Jed Diamond recommends a vegetarian diet--good if you have the discipline. A quick Internet search will also turn up dozens of other suggestions. But regardless of the dietary plan (and there are no miracle diets or panaceas so plan on will power being a part of whatever you choose), a simple exercise regimen must also be included in the weight loss program. Whether its a short walk every day (highly recommended) or signing up for a 10k and then training for it (also recommended), don't leave this part out.

Good luck, and, oh yes, start right now.
