Changing face of retirement: Calling it quits at 83 (and not 65)

Wesley's picture

Bob Barker of "The Price is Right" has decided to retire at the age of 83. The best part is Barker's quote:

"...I've decided to retire while I'm still young."

As more people like Barker work into their senior years, bias and societal norms against elder workers should continue to recede. And while Barker certainly has not needed the money, with people living longer and social security being less of a safety net, the ability to work well past 65 is going to be important for increasingly larger numbers of people. Furthermore, with declining birthrates in many industrialized countries, governments are going to depend on people like Barker to keep working and contributing to economic growth.
