Cool: Internet dating for boomers; Not cool: Getting scammed

Wesley's picture

If you are a victim of a romance scam (or just want to educate yourself on the latest Internet con artist tricks, then we've got a site for you. It's called Romance Scams and here is their description:

Are you wondering if the person that you are talking to is too good to be true? Are there things that you are being told that just don't make sense? Did the person find you on a singles site and start professing their love for you in a short time? Did they tell you that they were currently working in a foreign country, mainly Nigeria? Are they telling you that they are having trouble cashing their paychecks? If you can answer yes to any of these questions, you need to be a part of this group.

According to an AARP article on the subject, here are tip-offs to bogus online lovers:

* Lousy writing. Romance scammers often portray themselves as wealthy, educated U.S. or British businessmen, but since most are foreigners—primarily operating in Africa, Eastern Europe or East Asia—their prose is littered with poor grammar.

* A 23401 Zip Code. You may see this code listed on the dating websites. The number is taken from the telephone code—234—for Nigeria. But the Zip Code 23401 is actually in Keller, Va.

* Eye candy. Schemers often take their profile photos from websites featuring models.

* Corporate connections. "Paychecks" may come from legitimate U.S. corporations. Contact the company to verify employment and alert it that payroll accounts may have been infiltrated.

* Address request. He wants to send you "love" gifts (usually paid for with stolen plastic)—and set you up for a reshipping scam.

* The biggest red flag: Savvy schemers seduce you to gain your trust before going in for the kill. "If you write that you're an animal lover," Gregory says, "they say they run a pet rescue shelter. If you say you're struggling financially, [they say] they're millionaires."

As a research project for another blog, I responded to an unsolicited email I got from a profile someone found on me. Within five email exchanges they told me that they "loved" me and within 7 exchanges they were asking for money. I found the picture sent to me on another website dedicated to identifying Internet scams. Another tip is that they are often trying to correspond with hundreds of men and women at the same time and get confused with details. You can say, "As you remember in my last email..." and then make up a ridiculous detail. If they don't call you out on it then they are almost certainly scamming you.

re:Cool Internet Dating For Boomers

I just want to make a few comments about this blog.
1.Not all the scammers are lousy writers. The bad writers are the small boys who are trying their luck, and they are in it for the small money or valuables.Once they get a mobile phone,or $50 ,they are very happy.
But the real scammers who are really hurting many people in the west don't have lousy writing. They write very good english,as they are either college graduates or undergraduates. They write good grammar and talk with good accents,,which does a lot to confuse the victims of the scams. You can look up a site like www.elovedeceptions.com for more details on the operations of romance scammers.

2.Yes, 23401 is the telephone code and postal code for Lagos.

3.The major cases of romance scams are not as simple as you put it here. There is a lot more to it than meets the eye, or than people readily admit too.
Besides, their methods keep changing in a bid to ensnare more victims.
And if recent reports are to be believed, then these scammers are succeeding still.
I got some useful information from a blog www.alanprince.wordpress.com on this issue.
hope this helps someone, and sets the issues straight.

online dating dangers and a new safety tool

For anyone interested in the general topic of online dating, there is a new URL that describes a great new safety tool for those who make use (or who are contemplating such) of any of
the online dating sites, of which there must now be thousands available on the Internet. Only a few of the most major such sites offer any type of psychological testing and/or
background informational searches to be accomplished on the users of the sites. Compatibility testing and matching really does not help filter out those who are attempting to make
use of the sites based upon scamming, criminal, or otherwise harmful motivations. Reviews of the only couple sites that offer users some degree of criminal background history
checking and unfortunately these checks have been reviewed as being too limited in scope; generally only limited to the police records in a single State or else useless as the focused
upon individual is making use of an alias or pseudo name in his/her communications with the site.
Just very recently, a new approach has been developed that addresses this very problem. A psychologist who has an extraordinary background in psychological test development, as
well as in security related integrity or honesty testing has developed this new tool. This psychologist has developed a rather short/quick psychological test, based upon well-established
and sound psychological test construction logic, that is designed to assess almost a dozen problem areas that are highly associated with personal integrity/honesty. This 72-item,
multiple-choice test, the Personal Security Standards Psychological Questionnaire (PSSPQ), has recently gone through a rather thorough testing when used to screen or otherwise
evaluate the general integrity of persons who were attempting to contact potential 'dates'; through the services offered by online dating sites. The PSSPQ has recently been made
commercially available to users of online dating sites. An extremely complete (and quite lengthy) description of the PSSPQ when used in the online dating arena for individual
evaluation purposes is available on: http://www.home.earthlink.net/~lastone2/psspqdatingtest.htm . On this PSSPQ website, many helpful links are provided that greatly aid a reader in
understanding and evaluating the PSSPQ, its development, and its developer, as well as the many dangers that face anyone making use of the online dating sites.
