More than Half of MySpace Visitors are Now Age 35 or Older

My(Boomer)Space?

It appears that there is a misconception that social networking sites such as MySpace are the exclusive domain of teenagers, but an analysis by industry research firm comScore Media Metrix shows that significant number of adults are now using the social networking sites.

An analysis of visitors to MySpace.com shows that as the site has experienced dramatic visitor growth, it has become more popular among older Internet users. The most significant shift has occurred among teens 12-17, who accounted for 24.7 percent of the MySpace audience in August 2005, but today represent a much lower 11.9 percent of the site’s total audience. Conversely, Internet users between the ages of 35-54 now account for 40.6 percent of the MySpace visitor base, an 8.2 percentage point increase during the past year.

While the data does not look at frequency of visits which one would presume would tend to skew much younger, the results are still surprising--and certain to give teenage sons and daughters feelings of nausea as they picture their parents (and grandparents?) chatting away with monikers like "gr8GrAndphatha452" and "miNiVanMom223."

MySpace Ages

I believe Media Metrix uses their own panel for which they have detailed demographic profiles. However you are right to be skeptical of such claims unless and until it is proven that the source data is more than what people fill out on their profiles.

My Gray Space

Probably because we can't stand feeling like we're not cool. I find this statistic troubling. My Space is really nothing more than an opportunity to market stuff. Your so called, "friends," will try to sell you something. The way I see it, if I can't ask you to lend me a tool, help me lift something, or help me move, you're not my friend.:)

Good luck to getting your profile restored. We need the Myspace Ninja back(

The panel is skewed to 35+

The Media Metrix panel is massively skewed away from the younger folks - and thus a "smaller" increase in utilization by their panel produces these ridiculous figures.
