So you want to work past your retirement age, now what?

Wesley's picture

First off, and thanks to the Boomer Chronicles, we can tell you that "older" workers are becoming the norm and not the exception.

The number of workers over 50 is expected to increase 34 percent by 2012, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of workers under 50 will grow by only 3 percent during the same period.

Second:

``Almost 80 percent of baby boomers plan to work past retirement age," said Michael Smyer, dean of the Center on Aging & Work/Workplace Flexibility at Boston College.

But how to do find jobs appropriate for your skill set as well as where you are in life?

RetirementJobs.com is one good place to start.

From their website:

Here at RetirementJobs.com, our goal is to identify companies most-suited to older workers and match them with active, productive, conscientious, mature adults seeking a job or project that matches their lifestyle. Whether you are here seeking to supplement your income, a new challenge, a way to get out and meet people, or another reason, welcome! We are working hard to make each of your visits here a positive one, and we know our work will never quite be done.

Another interesting aspect is that the age at which workers believe they will retire increases as those workers age. Read into this what you like...changing societal retirement economics or that wisdom comes with aging. From 50+ Marketing:

Workers ages 18-34 (54%) are more likely than workers ages 35-49 (33%) and workers ages 50+ (28%) to expect that they will retire before the age of 65.

Similarly, workers ages 35-49 (10%) and workers ages 50+ (12%) are more likely than workers ages 18-34 (3%) to indicate that they will retire at the age of 75 or older.
