Will America Laugh At Ted Danson's Midlife Crisis?

Greg's picture

Midlife crisis gets a starring role in a new sitcom -- although the show may not last long.

Chicago-area critic George Haas describes the pitch for ABC's "Help Me Help You" as

"Ted Danson plays a successful author and psychiatrist who leads a weekly group therapy session for some dysfunctional folks even as he's dealing with his own midlife crisis."

MSNBC didn't like it, giving it a rating of "skip it," but ABC's online preview looks funny. And TV Guide's Daniel Manu says "Danson displays a welcome vulnerability as a group therapist undergoing a midlife crisis ... wittier than you'd ever expect."

The show premieres September 26 on ABC; it will be on Tuesdays at 9:30pm (8:30 Central).

The new season of "Nip/Tuck" will continue to "track Christian’s midlife crisis," according to the Boston Herald (one writer calls the character's midlife crisis "neverending.")

TV shows on MLC

I look forward to more shows about men in MLC. My hope is to move beyond protraying the man as a bumbling idiot trying to be a kinder gentler man that makes a fool of himself.

I guess it will always be a favorite topic for sitcoms and caricatures, but a serious look would be great. A good quality drama showing the struggles, the breaking down of old ways and the succesful emergence of a new life, wisdom and equanimity could be inspiring for many.
