Pay Death To Go Away
Submitted by Wesley on July 13, 2006 - 4:30pm.
The Forbes article "Pay Death To Go Away" by Matthew Herper notes that "in the past 100 years, the human life span has increased 65%, to 78 years." So if one had the appropriate financial resources, what more could be done to extend one's life? Take drugs (to lower cholesterol, blood pressure, etc.) While you are at it, you might want to win an Academy Award. One study even showed that actors who win Oscars live longer than those who are merely nominated. Of course the LifeTwo opinion is that death is going to catch up with us at some point and instead of trying to cheat the natural aging process by freezing our heads or restricting calories to the point that life just isn't fun anymore, just live a healthy life that you enjoy and that will not lead to any regrets. Even more important, don't "act old" and stop doing fun things just because of your chronological age. "You are only as old as you feel" is indeed true. Another opinion on the Forbes article comes from the blog "Fight Aging" who noted: There is presently no way to pay age-related degeneration and death to go away. A hundred thousand people end years of age-related pain and suffering in death each and every day: they would pay if they could. Calorie restriction is most likely the best available option today to obtain any sort of modest healthy life extension, and taking up that lifestyle choice will almost certainly reduce rather than increase your expenditures. There is, however, an option that apparently didn't occur to the author of the Forbes article: devoting your resources to plausible longevity research, thereby helping to create medical technologies that will allow people the choice of paying death to go away.
