Nothing wrong with a present for yourself at 40
I bought a convertible. Yes cliche but as I was nearing 40 I decided it was time to buy a fun car.

Further to my previous comment
I turned the car at the end of the lease. I believe that convertibles are vastly over-rated. After the first few months I rarely took the top down.

sometimes a toy is just a toy
at 45 I bought a Harley (a make that I had wanted since teen years - had ridden Japanese rockets for 25 years :-); at 49 I bought an older ute nad had it lowered and supercharged. No crisis involved - finally had money for the toys.
