About LifeTwo
Submitted by Wesley on June 9, 2006 - 11:57am.
LifeTwo is a community-driven life planning and support site for adults who have recognized the speed at which days are passing by. This often begins to happen in-between the mid-30s and the mid-50s. Sometimes this recognition is triggered by a divorce, career change, personal loss or some other significant event and sometimes it is just the calendar hitting 35 or 40. Our goal is to take what otherwise might become a midlife "crisis" and turn it into a positive midlife transition. We would like you to exit the experience with a renewed focus on your life-defining decisions particularly what you want to accomplish with the balance of your life. What do we mean “community-driven”? LifeTwo believes that our social networking structure is the ideal venue for individuals to confront the inevitable questions such as “is this all there is to my life?,” “Can I change it?,” “What about me?”, etc. LifeTwo lets people who are experiencing the same issues come together and interact on terms they are comfortable with–from anonymous commentor through to active topic leader. The majority of information on LifeTwo is created by community members who are sharing what worked/didn’t work for them. Virtually all information in LifeTwo is tagged, rated and commented on by others in the community which promotes integrity and relevancy. Is there really a need for this? Absolutely. People can find themselves rethinking their path in life for a variety of reasons. Looking for answers is hard because one often doesn't even know the right questions to ask. Common resources include self-help books, employing life coaches, going to therapists, taking anti-depressants, talking to friends/family, and just hoping these discomforting questions will go away. Books can be good but you can’t have a conversation with a book and their might not be a book that addresses your unique concerns. Furthermore three different books might have three different (and conflicting) approaches. Life coaching is new and it can be hard and expensive for people to find a right fit. Therapists and anti-depressants are medical steps that are expensive and typically held back for more severe cases. Broad-base keyword dependent search engines like Google and Yahoo are a very tough way to get to trusted, relevant information even if you know the proper keywords to use. Talking to friends and family becomes a problem when dealing with something that the person feels inhibited discussing with others and ceases to be effective when the friends/family become fatigued hearing about it. The Internet’s ability to mask identities also provides a safe haven for question asking without having to worry about being judged by personal acquaintances. Because the community self-polices the information provided it is more reliable than what any single source could provide. Wouldn’t a panel of experts really be best? Borrowing from James Surowiecki’s concept of the wisdom of crowds, diverse people with different levels of knowledge on a particular topic can make remarkably wise decisions. Furthermore an area such as “life choices” is simply too broad for a set number of experts to properly address and is best handled by committed participants collaborating with one another to share challenges, lessons learned and best practices. Finally, communities are fun and engaging and allow for continuous interactions and a closer connection than any top-down approach could provide. That said, we will have reviews of virtually every book addressing related areas. How do we make money? That is really a downstream issue since our immediate objective is to create a compelling experience for community members. However since this is a business you will notice the certain context relevant text-based advertising. We avoid pop-ups, blinking banner ads and other intrusive advertising. Why did we launch this company? Stated simply, like most people in the world we’ve experienced the very questions that sent us out looking for information about life transitions. While we found the occasional book and magazine article with useful information we did not find a single source that had what we need and nothing with a community to facilitate the process. Since creating a company was on both of our “life plans,” we decided to kill two birds with one stone and create a company to create the site. What is a "life plan"? We are going to spend a lot of time on this. In short, it is exactly what it sounds like it would be, "to do" list for the rest of one's life. It is the final output of all of the processes and techniques that we and others will suggest. What are the Blogging Boomers? We've hooked up with a few like-minded blogs to create a blog "carnival" which is a weekly linking to the best boomer-related posts on the participating blogs. More info here. Who are we? Oh yeah. We are Wesley, Greg and a growing cast of editors, contributors, and support staff. We have been involved in building online and media companies for many years. We are located in Southern California and hope that you enjoy the site. Anything else? Nothing you read on LifeTwo (or the Internet for that matter) is intended to substitute for the judgment of an individual's healthcare provider. Relationships and Online Dating
I really enjoyed your articles and reviews on relationships. Since many boomers are getting increasingly into internet dating, I would suggest that you review the new book Internet Safari, Finding Love Online at 65 by Gordon Scott Edwards.
