What's Next Magazine on Midlife Career Changes
Submitted by Wesley on August 30, 2006 - 2:46pm.
An interesting midlife career change article from What's Next entitled "Getting Fired: Chance of a Lifetime" has this witty opening:
The article notes that "more than ever, as the concept of corporate loyalty recedes into history and technology requires constantly evolving skill sets." According to career coach Mary Lindley Burton, who has been helping people make career transitions since 1978, people should be expecting to have 4 to 7 careers in their lifetime. She further noted that "The world changes rapidly now. It's not likely that one individual can amass enough knowledge to last a lifetime of work." Her biggest tip, learn to look inward and find out what you value as a skill. According to Burton this is an acquired, not innate, skill but a valuable one.
