![]() good column on working or notSubmitted by Anonymous on October 30, 2007 - 9:54am.
I've started to rethink my desire to quit work when I retire after watching my in-laws these past several years. He is a surgeon who retired 8 years ago. His wife has been a homemaker since they married. They're in the late 60's and life is a living hell for them. He knocks around the house, upsetting her solitude. She bicker and snarls at him. He has nothing to keep him occuppied. Golf at the c club goes only so far. She has garden club, junior league, church commitee and bridge club, He runs trivial errands - to the hardware store for a bolt - just to have something to do. They have money and do travel but even that has to be boring because they travel about 9 months out of the year. It seems like the go away three weeks, stay home for two then back on the road. I don't get the imopression they enjoy themselves but it keeps them busy. »
