midlife career changes

Well, I am a 54 year old male with over 30 years of human resources management experience facing unemployment. I have been unemployed since June, have had 3 interviews and 1 job offer. I want to do something different, maybe on my own, but I don't know what to do. I have money available to start my own business, but never have done that before. I have very little debt and a wife that says: "go for it". I don't know where to even start. I am scared of failure and just plain scared. I have taken personality surveys and they say do something with my hands, and immediate satisfaction.
Any suggestions on how to start, what to look at, what not to do?
