Things You Can Do On LifeTwo

Here are some things you can do on LifeTwo ...

Add a comment to an article

Adding a comment is simple (although we know it's hard to find right now). At the bottom of every article, there's a grey bar labeled "actions" in red. One of the choices is "Add New Comment." Just click there and you'll be at the comment form.

Comments usually won't appear until we've had a chance to review them. We plan to set up a way for registered users to bypass this and have their comments post immediately. Stay tuned!

Find things ... or browse

You can also

Join a discussion

We've set up several discussion forums. You can reach them several ways:

Once you're on the discussion page, you can add your comments. Find the grey bar with the word "Actions" in red and click on "Add new comment." You'll be taken to the comment form.

Please note that your comment may not appear until we review it. We hope to set up a way for registered users to bypass this check and have their comments appear immediately -- give us time!

If you have an idea for a new discussion forum, please post it in the discussion "New discussion topics I'd like to see".

Discussions aren't the only place your voice can be heard -- you can comment on just about any item appearing on LifeTwo using the same "Add new comment" link.

Keep up to date using RSS

If you want to stay up to date on new stories at LifeTwo without having to remember to visit us every day, you can subscribe to our RSS feeds.

What is a "RSS Feed?"

A RSS feed is a way for your browser or specialized RSS application to 'pull' new content from a site -- or many sites -- so it's ready whenever you want to read it. There are also websites that will collect the RSS feeds you want and present them to you as a personalized page. Bloglines is a popular one.

Most of these RSS readers also let you organize your "subscriptions" into folders you create -- say "career change" or "online deals."

For a better explanation than we can provide, see this BBC page.

LifeTwo's RSS Feeds

LifeTwo publishes RSS "feeds" for the homepage, each contributor's blog, and each section, topic, or tag. For instance, if you click on our tag "midlife crisis" to get to our list of stories on that subject, the RSS feed on that page will contain only new items about midlife crisis. If you go to our "Finds, Reviews, and Reference / Books" section, that RSS feed, you'll get only new material in that section. But if you subscribe to our homepage feed, you'll see all new stories on the site.

RSS On Other Sites

If you're at a site with a RSS feed, most browsers will show a icon in the address bar (where the "http:// ..." appears).

If the RSS icon does not appear in the address bar, sites will usually have a link on their homepage to information about their RSS feeds. News organizations, for instance, often have a dozen or more (National, Local, Sports ...).

Register to get even more great features

Why register on LifeTwo?

These features are currently not working, but we hope to bring them back soon:

  • email articles to yourself or friends: Registered users can email articles -- in the "Actions" area at the end of the item, click "send to a friend."
  • receive weekly email digests of new LifeTwo articles: ... and you have complete control over starting / stopping it. See this page for instructions on how to set this up.
  • buddy lists: Registered users can identify other users and contributors as "buddies." You'll see a "my buddies' recent posts" so that you can see what they've written since the last time you visited.
  • get content recommended just for you: Just like Amazon recommends books based on your browsing and buying habits, we can recommend articles you should be interested in. When you rate the articles at LifeTwo with one to five stars, our system looks for other posts that are highly recommended by people with voting patterns similar to you (so the more you vote, the better the recommendations!).

In the future, registered users will be able to organize groups of other users around common interests.

How to register

Under the "log in" button at the top of the lefthand column, click on create new account. Fill in the information -- only the username and email address are required -- and click "create new account." We'll send an email to that address with a temporary password, and instructions on how to change it.

Why do you need my email address?

Since we allow registered users to easily send articles via our mail server, we need to be sure spammers don't take advantage of this. Ensuring that the person registering is real, with a valid email address, is one line of defense. Rest assured that we won't share your email address with anyone outside LifeTwo, nor will we send you unsolicited commercial messages. Within LifeTwo, only senior management has access to the database containing the user information.

How to Add a Bookmark

Registered users can bookmark pages and come back to them later.

Once you're registered, in the "Actions" section below each article you'll see a "bookmark this" link. Click on it and that item will be added to your bookmarks.

Your bookmarks appear in the "Your bookmarks" list in the left-hand column. A more detailed list is available if you click on "more info" at the bottom of that list.

There is also a link to "Your bookmarks" near the top of the left-hand column.

There are two ways to remove a bookmark:

  • when you're at any bookmarked page, click on "unbookmark this" in the "Actions" section under the story.
  • go to the detailed list of bookmarks and click on "unbookmark this" in the right-hand column.

How To Receive a Weekly Digest of New Articles

Registered users can keep up to date with LifeTwo by signing up for a weekly email that lists new articles on the site.

Once you're logged in, go to "my account" (it's under your user name in the left-hand column).

Click on the tab "My notify settings."

On the page that appears, the first button turns the emails on or off.

In the next section you select what you want to see in your email: new content (and if so, the title, title + teaser, or entire article) and / or new comments.

Once you've got it the way you want, click on "save settings."
