More Things To Do Before You Die ... This Time It's Films

Greg's picture

Is working your way through 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die somewhat overwhelming? Feel like watching a good movie instead? This month the UK's Channel 4 will be running a three hour special on the "50 Films To See Before You Die," and it hasn't taken long for someone to produce "10 Films to Skip Before You Die."

First, the bad, according to curmudgeonly Western Mail writer Duncan Higgitt:

#10: Blue Juice (Catherine Zeta Jones and Cornish surfers)
#9 Star Wars (is he kidding?)
#8 Dances With Wolves
#7 Rocky I - V
#6 The Sound of Music
#5 Bambi
#4 Independence Day
#3 Pearl Harbor (to which we add: every film directed by Michael Bay)
#2 Harry Potter (all of them): "two of the films are average ... the other two are very dull."
#1 Love Actually

... which sounds like seventeen films to me.

The "50 Films To See Before You Die" list follows in alphabetic order. The final ranking will be revealed later this month.

2001: A Space Odyssey
A Bout de Souffle
Aguirre, the Wrath of God
Alien
All About Eve
Apartment, The
Apocalypse Now
Badlands
Black Narcissus
Boyz N the Hood
Brazil
Breakfast Club, The
Cabaret
Chinatown
City of God
Come and See
Dawn of the Dead
Donnie Darko
Erin Brockovich
Fanny and Alexander
Fight Club
Heavenly Creatures
Hero
Ipcress File, The
King of Comedy, The
Ladykillers, The
Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India
Lost in Translation
Manhattan
Manhunter
Mulholland Drive

North by Northwest

Scarface
Searchers, The

OK. But "Breakfast Club" over "Pretty In Pink?" Or the seminal "Valley Girl?"
